A hydraulic power steering pump is driven by the engine through the auxiliary belt. Inside it a vane or gear set draws fluid from the reservoir and delivers it under pressure to the valve of the steering gear, which directs that pressure to one side of the rack piston or the other according to the effort at the steering wheel. A flow-control valve returns surplus flow to the reservoir at high engine speed, and a relief valve limits the pressure.
The pump runs whenever the engine runs. Its bearings, its seals and its vanes wear over time, and it suffers when it is run with the fluid low, old or contaminated. A worn pump gives heavy steering, a whine that follows engine speed and leaks at the shaft seal.
